THE FEI “HELMET RULE” AT A GLANCE
Starting 1 January 2013, the use of a properly fastened Protective
Headgear will be mandatory while riding on the show grounds (article
140.1, General Regulations).
This rule applies in all Disciplines
“Protective Headgear” is defined as “appropriate helmet or Headgear
that is in compliance with the applicable international testing
standards” (Glossary, General Regulations).
Failure to wear Protective Headgear where and when required after
being notified to do so by an Official, shall result in a Yellow Warning
Card, being issued to the Athlete.
In the field of play1, the sports rules apply, and each Discipline has its
own rule rules. See the below table summary for details.

Exception: Senior Athletes may be allowed to remove
their Headgear for ceremonial protocol in the Competition

Jumping and Cross-country tests: wearing a properly

European (EN), British (PAS), North American
(ASTM), or Australian/New Zealand tested standards,
is compulsory for anyone jumping an obstacle (art.

At the Dressage test, the Dressage rules apply.

The term ”field of play” is used here for ease of reading and covers the competition
arena venue and adjacent warm-up areas, as well as riding from one to the other and
from the stables for the purposes of competing (article 140.1 General Regulations).

PARA DRESSAGE
Protective headgear is mandatory.
Exception: Athletes 18 years and older, riding Horses
seven (7) years and older may wear a top hat/bowler
instead of Protective Headgear at the actual Competition
and the warming-up directly prior to the Competition
(with no break before the Competition), which includes
riding between the stable and the warm-up area, riding
of the competing Horse in the warm-up area, and riding
back to the stable.
A Protective Headgear formed as a top hat may be used
in the same situations as a standard top hat.
